Different Types of Diabetes Mellitus

What Are The 4 Different Types Of Diabetes Mellitus?

  1. Type 1 Diabetes Previously referred to as Insulin-Dependent Diabetes mellitus (IDDM)
  2. Type 2 Diabetes Previously referred to as Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
  3. Gestational Diabetes mellitus Diabetes During Pregnancy (GDM)
  4. Other specific types of diabetes due to other diseases, drugs, genetic defects.

Now let’s talk about these different types of diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Insulin-Dependent)

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

The body produces little or no insulin in Type 1 diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes can grow at any age, although it is more common in children and young adults.
  • Symptoms often occur abruptly in babies and toddlers but can appear gradually in adults.
  • Type 1 diabetes affects about 10% of all diabetics.

Signs Of Type 1 Diabetes

  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger and thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness and tiredness

Pregnancy And Diabetes Type 1

  • If you have Type 1 diabetes, it is important that you properly monitor your diabetes. Pregnancies can be prepared in advance.
  • You must have exceptional diabetes regulation (normal blood glucose) at least three months before childbirth and during birth.
  • You and your baby would need a great deal of special attention. Inquire with your doctor about diabetes educators who practice in maternity diabetes care.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

The body also releases insulin in Type 2 Diabetes. However, the insulin generated is either ineffective or insufficient to regulate blood glucose levels.

1. Type 2 diabetes affects about 90% of diabetics.

2. Type 2 diabetes typically progresses steadily.

3. The majority of Type 2 diabetes patients are overweight and above the age of 40.

Signs Of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Feeling Tired
  • Blurred Vision
  • Dry, Itchy skin
  • Increased hunger and thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Tingling or loss of feeling in hands or feet
  • Non- healing infections of skin vagina, and/or bladder
  • Vaginal yeast infections
  • Often no symptoms are present when Type 2 is diagnosed.

Nice Guidelines Type 2 Diabetes Management

  • As advised, check the blood glucose level. Use blood glucose levels to help you treat diabetes.
  • To keep blood glucose levels within acceptable limits, an oral hypoglycemic agent or insulin might be needed.
  • Weight Loss And Exercise can be the most significant element in assisting with blood glucose regulation in diabetics that are overweight. To lose weight, eat balanced, low-fat meals and work out daily.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes that occurs during pregnancy is known as gestational diabetes.

  • Gestational diabetes affects about 2% to 3% of all pregnant people.
  • Women who are overweight and/or older are more prone to have gestational diabetes.
  • African American, Hispanic, and American Indian people are also more likely to have gestational diabetes.
  • About 35% of women who experience gestational diabetes will go on to develop Type 2 diabetes. Keeping a good body weight lowers the harm.

Management Of Gestational Diabetes

In the sixth month of birth, both women should be tested for diabetes (weeks 24-28). If you are born with gestational diabetes, the doctor can help you treat it with food and potentially insulin.
