Family Bonding Activities Idea
1. Essential Oil–Infused Gratitude Garland
This colorful, colorful garland is a simple activity that you can do with your children. It’s the ideal way to bring the fragrances of the season into your house while also reminding your family of the value of appreciation.
Supplies:
- Large yarn needle
- Scissors
- Your favorite essential oils
- Desired color(s) of:
- Felts balls
- #10 crochet thread
- Cardstock
Instructions:
1. Arrange the felt balls in color groups, and then in the order you want them on the garland.
Tip: Keep your felt balls separated with a divided tray or individual containers.
2. Consider the desired distance between each felt ball, measure your thread to the chosen length—leaving six inches of extra thread on each end—and cut with scissors (approximately 12.5 feet of thread is needed, for three finger spacing between felt balls).
3. At one end of the thread, tie a knot six inches from the end.
4. Thread the needle and, from the center, insert it, stringing the first felt ball to the knot.
5. Continue threading the felt balls, leaving three-finger spacing between each.
6. When you’ve strung all the felt balls, tie a knot after your last ball. Make sure to leave at least six inches of extra thread at the end.
7. Tie a loop at both ends to hang.
8. Use a blend of your favorite essential oils on the felt balls and hang in your home for an uplifting aroma that lasts for weeks.
For gratitude flags:
1. Cut a strip of color-coordinated cardstock 0.5 x 4.5 inches, folding in half.
2. Cut a triangle at the open end to create a two-pointed flag.
3. Have your family members write what they’re grateful for on individual flags.
4. Drape the flags over the thread between the felt balls and use a glue stick or tape to secure the ends together. Simply remove the flags before storing and repeat with new gratitude flags next year! For easy storage, wrap the garland around a piece of corrugated cardboard, making a slit at the beginning and end to secure the thread.
