Before we get into the recipe I think it’s important to mention how to get a healthy source of iron in our lifestyle. In this blog, I’m going to share with you the back story about iron, what anemia is in Eastern medicine and what you can get a healthy source of iron from.
Iron is needed by the body to produce red blood cells. Energetically iron assists the physical body and provides a healthy and vibrationally clear pathway for the transportation of nutrients, as well as benefiting the overall condition of the blood. Iron in most supplemental forms will often cause some level of dryness and constipation.
Some of the iron deficiencies that I have seen in practice, fatigue, lethargy, poor memory, color complexion, dry skin, and blood deficiency may lead to insomnia, dizziness, muscle cramps, aches and pains, and menorrhea, weak muscles, floaters in the eyes, brittle nails, and pale lips.
All foods are a relatively poor source of iron. Cooking and soaking iron foods destroy iron content. You will benefit from iron foods if they are eaten raw, slightly steamed, or ingested as squeezed juices. Dried fruits are a great source of iron but make sure the dried foods are organic and unsulphured. Liquid chlorophyll from fresh-squeezed green foods are also high in iron.
AMENORRHEA
A condition in which the menstrual period does not occur. This can be caused by hormonal imbalances, systemic diseases (such as syphilis, TB, and nephritis), emotional disorders, obesity, malnutrition, or diabetes. Congenital defects and reproductive system malfunction are the most common causes. Tian Gui may fail to fill the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels due to congenital deficiency, constitutional weakness, underdevelopment of the body, or late development, resulting in amenorrhea or scanty menstruation. Excessive sexual activity, multiparity, or chronic sickness can drain Kidney Essence, leading the Penetrating (Chong) Channel to empty, resulting in amenorrhea.
Qi and Blood Deficiency caused by constitutional Middle Burner weakness, inappropriate food, physical and mental overwork, emotional strain, or loss of Blood can induce emptiness of the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels, resulting in amenorrhea. Emotional pressures can lead to stagnation of the Liver Qi and Blood, which can lead to amenorrhea. Cold invasion into the uterus can cause blood stasis and amenorrhea.
Improper diet, such as an excessive intake of oily foods, Spleen Yang Deficiency, or Dampness Invasion, can cause Dampness and Phlegm to stagnate in the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels, resulting in amenorrhea. Menstrual disorders like Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) A state of irritation, depression, anxiety, exhaustion, and bloating that occurs toward the end of the menstrual cycle. When pregnancy does not occur during the cycle, this illness may occur owing to a decrease in the levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen, which are secreted from the corpus luteum in the ovary after ovulation.
Dysmenorrhea
Menstrual pain is not usual because of uterine cramping. Dysmenorrhea has an unknown origin and affects more than half of all women. It frequently appears after ovulation and when there is no pregnancy. As the levels of progesterone and estrogen hormones fall, the delivery of oxygen and nutrients decreases, and the uterine lining tissues (decidua) begin to shed. This causes the blood vessels in the endometrium to contract, which can cause cramping in the lower abdomen.
Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low back, and thigh discomfort are some of the other symptoms that may develop. Dysmenorrhea secondary to menstruationDysmenorrhea caused by a gynecological issue is less common. It is commonly associated with endometriosis, the use of an intrauterine device, pelvic inflammatory illness, and even fertility issues.
Emotional pressures and excessive pensiveness can result in Liver Qi Stagnation and Blood Stagnation, which can lead to pain. External infections such as Wind, Cold, and Dampness, as well as excessive consumption of cold and raw foods during periods, can cause obstruction of the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels, resulting in dysmenorrhea. Constitutional Yang Deficiency predisposes to the development of Empty Cold in the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels, which are inextricably linked to the Uterus, resulting in blocked Blood flow and dysmenorrhea.
MENSTRUATION IS IRREGULAR
A menstrual cycle that deviates from the average variable normalcy. The average length of a woman’s regular cycle is 28 days. Ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) typically occurs in the middle of the cycle. The moderate volume of bloody flow from endometrial shedding at the end of the cycle lasts on average 4-5 days. The length of the period, the volume, color, and texture of the bloody discharge, and any accompanying pain or other bodily discomforts are all indicators of anomalies in the cycle.
There are numerous pathologic reasons that can contribute to irregular menstruation. External cold, heat, and dampness, emotional disturbances such as concern and repressed rage, and lifestyle issues such as excessive sexual activity and grand multiparity Constitutional weakness is a significant pathogenic component as well.
Heat drives blood out of the arteries, whether from Excess or Deficiency (Empty Heat). While a lack of Spleen or Kidney Qi can result in a failure of the Blood to be contained in the vessels, resulting in early menstruation (a shortened cycle). Cold, whether from excess or deficiency, can infiltrate the bloodstream and cause blood to coagulate, preventing fresh blood from being produced.
The Penetrating (Chong) Channel, the Sea of Blood, then becomes empty. This can result in late menstruation. Liver Qi Stagnation, caused primarily by emotional stress, obstructs the Conception (Ren) and Penetrating (Chong) Channels. Qi Stagnation causes Blood Stagnation, preventing the Sea of Blood from nourishing the Uterus. Kidney failure can also deplete the Sea of Blood, resulting in Uterus malnourishment and irregular menstruation.
Menstrual irregularities
Menstrual irregularities are classified into three categories: early, late, and irregular (sometimes early and other times late). Early menstruation can be classified into three types: Excess Heat, Empty Heat, and Qi Deficiency. Late menstruation can be classified into one of four patterns: Excess Cold, Empty Cold, Blood Deficiency, or Qi and Blood Stasis. Irregular menstruation that varies between early and late periods can be attributed to one of two conditions: Liver Qi Stagnation or Kidney Deficiency.
