Additionally, the psychological stress of chronic pain can lead to depression and anxiety, which can further contribute to increased levels of suffering. Chronic pain can also affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and even interfere with sleep patterns and quality of life overall.

We can better understand and cope with chronic pain by recognizing the relationship between our physical and mental states. The mind-body connection centers around the concept that our physical health can be improved when our thoughts and emotions are in balance. When dealing with chronic pain, it is essential to address any physical causes and look beneath the surface at what might be causing emotional distress or stress that could be contributing to the issue. By learning how to recognize these connections, you can learn more effective ways of managing your chronic pain.

In addition to individual herbs, herbal formulas are also sometimes used. Popular TCM herbal formulas for treating emotional imbalances and pain include Xiao Yao Wan (“free and easy”></span> formula) for addressing emotional issues, Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San (“chuan xiong abdominal knocking powder”) for relieving abdominal pains due to liver heat, and San Miao Wan (“three miracle pills”) for treating joint pains due to wind-dampness.

Herbal Medicine: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbs help restore balance and address emotional imbalances, such as anxiety, depression, or restlessness. Thought out my clinical practice I have found incredible results using all modalities of TCM. Many of my patients will find 50% relief within two days. What I can’t accomplish in the treatment room I send my patient home with home care practices to extend their treatment in-between visits. When home care is used effectively, these practices can help create a sense of well-being and relaxation and reduce anxiety and depression. Research has also shown that regular mind-body practices can lead to long-term benefits such as improved physical health and quality of life.
